I have had issues off and on for many years with my employment at the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS).  For obvious reasons, I don’t care to share the details.  Needlesstosay, the situation was becoming less beneficial for me as time has passed.

I discussed my position with my supervisors and admins many times over the years only to be met with resistance.  At a certain point, it just felt like I was beating a dead horse at getting any kind of advancement.  Even though I was able to complete my Masters Degree, there still didn’t seem to be much enthusiasm to consider my efforts to advance my education and skills (until I personally arranged a meeting with them months ago).

So recently, to my amazement, I had several job opportunities present themselves to me…the most beneficial which was an Instructional Technology Specialist position at LLCC (community college here in Springfield) located “next door” to UIS.  Several weeks ago, I was invited for an interview with their IT dept (which consequently turned out being a 3 hour interview with three members).  The interview went quite well and had a fairly good feeling that I had a shot at the job.

Two weeks ago, I received a phone call from LLCC’s HR department…extending me an offer for the position.  🙂   I told them that I would need a couple of days to talk things over with a few people (including my current employer) and think things over.   I met with my supervisor, director, and CIO and discussed the situation with them.  They expressed their disappointment with my departure and the inability to “match” LLCC’s offer.

Therefore, the BIG NEWS is that I have accepted the position with Lincoln Land Community College.  Most of you are somewhat familiar with Lincoln Land Community College (LLCC) and its location but for those who don’t, I have included an attachment to help out.

My responsibilities for this position would be:

Lincoln Land Community College is currently accepting applications for this full-time position reporting to the Director of Instructional Technology Services.  This position provides direct support to the college’s instructional technology operations and delivery of services.  Duties include, but are not limited to, supporting faculty in the development of online courses and web-based supplemental instructional materials; developing and delivering instructional technology training and workshops; developing instructional web and media-based interactive learning objects; and assisting in the development and maintenance of the department’s web presence.

Job requirements:

A bachelor’s degree in Instructional Technology or related field is required, consideration will be given to an individual who is making significant progress towards a bachelor’s degree and possesses relevant work experience. Additional position requirements include at least 3 years of experience working in the instructional technology field; experience providing technical training; knowledge and experience supporting an online learning management system, Blackboard preferred; knowledge of web and media based technologies for education; experience using Final-Cut Pro, or similar software; experience working with graphics production software, Photoshop preferred; knowledge of web design and delivery tools; and the ability to work with and train in both a PC and Macintosh environment. Experience working in a team based project development environment; working in higher education and in direct support of college faculty; and with online course development standards and procedures are preferred.

With this position, I will be getting an 25% increase in pay from what I am making now.  This position works under the same retirement system and health benefits (mostly) as I have now.  I will get a payout for my vacation time but nothing for my sick time.  No probationary period.  No parking fees.  No union dues.   During Spring Break, the campus closes down (i.e. free week off).  They work 4 days a week during the summer.

So, the original start date for the position was April 16th but they kindly offered an option for me to complete the semester at UIS (which I have accepted) because of the variety of roles I play.  So my last day at UIS will be May 11, 2012 and I will be starting my position with LLCC on May 21, 2012.

Needlesstosay, the last few days for me have been a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions for me but now that I have made the decision, I think that I have been able to come to terms with the fact that I have made the right decision. It still feels a bit weird for me because I think in the back of my mind, I truly felt that I would never leave and would be retiring from UIS in another 13 years or so.  Never would I have thought that so many opportunities would present themselves so soon…and all at one time.

So over the next 8 weeks, I will be documenting my job thoroughly and working with admin & staff to help them in the transition of my absence. I have already met with a few people within the department as well as university colleagues who know of my intentions and who have sincerely expressed their displeasure about me leaving and yet supportive of my future endeavors.  It feels dumb to say but I know when it comes time to clean my office area, it’s going to be a little emotional for me because I will truly know that after 17 years of service my time at UIS is at an end….and to see an areaI’ve surrounded with my work over the years (as well as various personal items that I have kept there) stripped down to bare walls and bare shelves will be a sobering moment for me.
